The Ochsner Cancer Institute is recognized as a center of excellence of the Ochsner Medical Center. The institute conducts multidisciplinary cancer treatment and research through designated cancer-care facilities including The Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center and the Ochsner Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as Ochsner Health Centers in Baton Rouge, Slidell and Covington and other affiliates. Ochsner Cancer Institute has been designated a Community Clinical Oncology Program by the National Cancer Institute since 1983, and received a $4.17 million grant from NCI in 2011 to further its research and treatment programs. The institute provides cancer screening, treatment, education and support services for more than 2,000 new patients annually.

Established in 1941, the Ochsner Clinic was named for one of its five founders, Dr. Alton Ochsner, who discovered the link between smoking and lung cancer. The founders’ intent to create a group practice similar to those of the Mayo and Cleveland Clinics met with some initial resistance, but the clinic opened for business in 1942. In 1954, a new facility, the Ochsner Foundation Hospital, was completed which included residential facilities for nurse and physician trainees. A research building followed in 1959.

The Ochsner Cancer Institute was founded in 1981 and combines top-level clinical care and research programs in the largest clinical trials network in Louisiana and Mississippi. Phase I of the Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art treatment facility, was completed in 2010. Phase II is currently underway.

Mesothelioma Treatment at Ochsner Cancer Institute

Mesothelioma patients at the Ochsner Cancer Institute are treated at the Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center’s Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic, under the direction of Frank E. Mott, MD, FACP. New patients are assigned a team of physicians and specialists drawn from the departments of medical oncology, pulmonary medicine, thoracic surgery and radiology and other related specialties. The team works together to develop and coordinate an individual diagnostic and treatment plan for each patient, meeting weekly to evaluate and update the plan.

A variety of treatment options are available, including minimally invasive and robotic surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Patients may also be eligible to participate in ongoing clinical trials. Additional services provided at the clinic include oncology certified nursing, dietary and nutritional counseling, and social services. The Brent House Hotel has offered on-campus accommodations for patients and loved ones since 1954.
