If you have been stricken with asbestos cancer, such as peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma, you should definitely think about several issues before deciding which medical center or cancer treatment program might be best for you. One of the challenges that face mesothelioma patients is that although the disease may often take twenty years or more to manifest, by the time symptoms do appear and has been definitively identified, it is generally in an advanced stages. Finding a treatment center with up-to-date technology and doctors who have experience in treating asbestos-related diseases is consequently extremely important if you or a family member has developed mesothelioma. Besides offering drugs, radiation therapy and surgical treatment, many hospitals that specialize in cancer treatment also have counselors to help patients and their family members handle the difficulty of dealing with malignant mesothelioma sometimes referred to as asbestos lung cancer. Depending on where you live, the best option isn't located close to your residence; if that is the case you will have to balance the hassles of traveling to obtain treatment (including the accompanying costs for you and your loved ones) with the benefits of receiving medical care from experts in mesothelioma treatment.

The Toledo Community Hospital Oncology Program is a National Cancer Research Institute-sponsored Clinical Community Oncology Program. The CCOP is a consortium of community hospitals and physicians that are funded by a peer reviewed cooperative agreement, allowing them to participate in NCI-sponsored clinical trials of new cancer treatments, prevention and control studies.

The Toledo Community Hospital Oncology Program (TCHOP) is one of the original clinical research programs sponsored by the NCI, which includes 13 institutions and six private oncology offices located throughout Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

The program's regional institution review board monitors cancer research protocols at all participating facilities. This review board consists of 49 participating physicians who are surgeons and oncologists, and 90 allied health professionals including oncology nurses and clinical research assistants.

Physicians who are part of TCHOP have authored dozens of peer reviewed published manuscripts in leading medical journals. Many of them have served as chair of numerous protocols and professional committees as well.
