Clinical and Laboratory Research
Board certified in general surgery, Dr. Baumgartner’s clinical expertise is in the treatment of abdominal tumors with hyperthermic (heated) intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), often referred to as a “chemo bath.” This innovative treatment technique involves the circulation of heated chemotherapy throughout the abdomen following surgical resection of tumors. HIPEC’s advantage over more traditional chemotherapy treatments is that it allows for higher concentrations of chemotherapy drugs to be administered while eliminating many of the usual toxicities. Dr. Baumgartner obtained invaluable experience with this technique while completing his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh—one of the highest volume HIPEC centers worldwide.
Dr. Baumgartner is also recognized for his clinical experience in the treatment of melanoma.
Dr. Baumgartner’s research interests include, but are not limited to, immunotherapy, further advancing his knowledge and technique relative to HIPEC treatments, melanoma, and clinical trials.
Dr. Baumgartner is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society of Surgical Oncology. He is an associate member of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Association for Cancer Research. His work has been published in several peer-reviewed medical journals.
