Dr. Robert J. Cerfolio entered medical school at the University of Rochester as a college sophomore under an early selection program and received his medical degree from this institution in 1988. He then went on to the University of Connecticut, St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center located in Hartford, Connecticut where he completed a two-year residency in general surgery from 1988-1990. A one-year residency in urologic surgery ensued at Cornell University Medical College, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York from 1990-1991. At that time, Dr. Cerfolio decided to transition his career from urology to thoracic surgery moving on to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where he completed a two-year residency in general surgical training from 1991-1993 followed by a cardiothoracic fellowship from 1993-1996. Today, Dr. Cerfolio serves as professor of surgery and chief of the section of thoracic surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was named the James H. Estes Family Lung Cancer Research Endowed Chair in April of 2010. In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Cerfolio received his MBA in 2013.
Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Cerfolio is recognized worldwide as an expert in thoracic surgery and a leader in the field of robotic thoracic surgery in which he specializes in minimally invasive robotic lung cancer and esophageal cancer surgery. Performing over 1,000 operations per year, Dr. Cerfolio is considered to be one of the most in-demand thoracic surgeons on an international level.
Dr. Cerfolio is a member of several professional societies, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS), the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA) of which he served as president in 2013. Dr. Cerfolio is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST).
Clinical Research and Publications
Dr. Cerfolio’s research interests include outcomes and techniques in robotic thoracic surgery, efficiency in hospital operating rooms, reducing morbidity relative to lung surgery, and the management of air leaks and the pleural space.
A noted author, Dr. Cerfolio has over 125 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 40 book chapters to his name, of which he serves as first author on over 95% of these publications. Dr. Cerfolio travels extensively as a visiting professor and expert lecturer, presenting his research at scientific meetings, universities, and academic centers all over the world.Sources
